Roman Polanski - Roman Polanski free

Roman Polanski - Roman Polanski free: He has been for 30 years despite facing a prison term in the United States for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. And now, On July 12, 2010, the Swiss authorities announced that they would not extradite Polanski to the USA after they judged the American request for extradition was faulty. The Justice minister Eveline Widmer-Stumpt freed him from house arrest and told a press conference, "He is a free man".

Roman Polanski has been under house arrest in Switzerland and faced extradition to the U.S. after fleeing the country in 1978 after having sex with a 13 year old girl.

In a statement, the ministry wrote:
The 76-year-old French-Polish film director Roman Polanski will not be extradited to the USA. The freedom-restricting measures against him have been revoked. This announcement was made by Mrs. Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, head of the Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police, in Berne on Monday. The reason for the decision lies in the fact that it was not possible to exclude with the necessary certainty a fault in the U.S. extradition request, although the issue was thoroughly examined. Moreover, also the principles of State action deriving from international public order were taken into account.
